Relationship=Grandaunt of Lane Robert ELLIS.
Ella Virginia YUNGEN was born on January 27, 1911 at Berne, Milton Township, Dodge County, Minnesota, United States of America. She was the daughter of Peter JUNGEN and Ella Charlotte BAUMANN. Ella Virginia YUNGEN married Caryl Frederick CLOSNER, son of Fred CLOSNER and Fannie YONILE, on March 2, 1939 at Hibbing, Minnesota, United States of America. Ella Virginia YUNGEN married Kenneth Leslie HANSEN, son of Peter HANSEN and Clara BECKER, on November 26, 1968 at Rochester, Olmsted County, Minnesota, United States of America. Ella Virginia YUNGEN died on October 30, 2005 at Charter House, Rochester, Olmsted County, Minnesota, United States of America, at age 94; Ella Virginia Hansen
A memorial service for Ella Hansen will be held Monday November 21st at 11:00 AM at the Charter House Chapel. The Reverend Nicklas Mezacapa will officiate. Mrs. Hansen, 94, of Rochester, died Sunday October 30, 2005 at Charter House.
Ella Virginia Yungen was born January 27, 1911 in Berne, Minnesota. Raised in Pine Island, she was a graduate of Winona State University in the early 1930s. She became a schoolteacher, teaching in Grand Meadow for 4 years. In 1943, she became a clerk at the Pine Island Post Office, and in 1949 became its Post Master. She retired in 1971.
She was married to Caryl F. Closner on March 2, 1939 in Hibbing. He died in 1944 while serving his country during World War II. On November 26, 1968 she married Kenneth Hansen in Rochester. He died in 1973.
She was a member of Calvary Episcopal Church in Rochester, where she served as treasurer of the Calvary Episcopal Church Women. She also was a past-treasurer of the Goodhue County Postmasters' Association, and volunteered as a 'Pink Lady' at Rochester Methodist Hospital.
She is survived by 2 step-daughters, Ellen (Tom) Hansen McKoy of Seattle, Washington, and Mary (H.P.) Hansen Baker of Thousand Oaks, California; and 3 step-grandchildren. In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents, Peter and Ella Yungen, 2 brothers, and 2 sisters.
If so desired, memorials may be directed to Calvary Episcopal Church, 3rd Avenue & 2nd Street SW, in Rochester, Minnesota. She was New Tag Hello friends and loved ones of Ella Hansen. My name is Lane Ellis, and Ella was my "grand" aunt, in every sense of the word grand. Ella's older sister Margaret Yungen Ellis was my grandmother.
I know Ella the best from the past eleven years, after I moved back to Minnesota from Colorado. Although I have many childhood memories of Ella, including her visits to my grandparents farm to see her sister Margaret, it is in the last chapter of her life when I have had the pleasure of getting to know her not only as a relative but as a dear friend.
In 1994 I became interested in family history, and before long I was down from my home in Duluth to visit Ella in Rochester on the first of many visits. Ella and I spent hours talking and playing Scrabble, and I asked her of her memories of her parents, aunts and uncles, and grandparents.
On these first visits I took brief notes, writing down key names and dates in the family history, and a few stories. As the years passed my interest in genealogy grew more serious, and in 2002 I had the pleasure of conducting an in-depth interview with Ella, lasting over four hours and encompassing over a hundred questions.
I remember that weekend with Ella well, as I had stayed here at Charter House in a guest apartment. The day I arrived, an unusually warm April day, Ella greeted me with her large loving warm smile and a big hug, and I noticed more than ever just how much she resembled my grandmother, her sister.
We visited for some time in her beautifully decorated 12th floor apartment and then she surprised me by suggesting we walk over to Michael's restaurant for dinner.
Ella loved to walk and we had a fine time making our way past the park next door and to dinner. Later we walked home and spent the evening laughing and visiting.
In the morning we had dinner at the top of the building here, and then Ella just had to show me the walk she had been taking lately through the Skywalk system, an impressive walk of perhaps a half mile or more during which she pointed out her favorite sights and sounds to me.
Once back at her apartment we began our marathon interview, where she was full of life and energy throughout, answering all of my questions enthusiastically and offering up many new stories I'd never heard before.
She had endurance and drive at age 91 and up until the end that would be the envy of any person a third her age.
After the interview questions were through, we ate dinner and then I said goodbye a departed. Now that Ella has passed away the interview she gave me has become even more special to me, a recording of her voice and remembrances which will live on.
I'll share a few additional brief memories of Ella with you today.
When Ella first met my wife Julie and had spent just a few minutes with her, she said to Julie, "I like you. You're nutty, just like me." Ella and Julie got along like old friends, and Ella eventually gave Julie many of her fancy dresses, including some to be used in the theater in Duluth.
One summer day a few years ago Ella took me to see the tiny cemetery in Berne, Minnesota, where her Swiss born grandparents Jacob and Elizabeth Baumann are buried, a place she hadn't been in many years. That was a trip with Ella I will always remember.
My final memory of Ella is from our last visit together, just this year in the early Spring. She showed me her new fourth floor supportive care apartment, which still looked much like her old house on 11 and a half street, with her bird sculpture on the wall and other familiar treasures.
I asked her if she wanted to go out for a drive to Pine Island, and she thought this was a fabulous idea.
We drove through town and I stopped to get gas for the car on the way to Pine Island. As I was paying for the gas and walking back to the car I felt like the luckiest man alive, to be taking my 94 year old grand aunt Ella out for a drive.
I savored every second of that trip, although it did not last as long as I had hoped. As we came into Pine Island I heard a noise under the car and saw something fly off and unto the side of the road, which was a belt from the car.
I explained what had happened and apologized to Ella, and we turned around and headed back to Charter House. I could tell that it was the alternator belt that had broken, so I knew that as long as I kept the engine running we would be able to safely get back to Charter House, which we did.
I knew also that I would have to take the car directly to the garage however, which meant that Ella and I would not be able to have our usual last leisurly visit and a long goodbye.
This time it was different.
We gave each other a hug, a kiss, and said goodbye. This was my last visit with Ella, an exceptional woman who will forever be a part of my life.
I'll finish with Ella's own answer when I posed the following question to her during our interview :
Do you have any secrets of life or wisdom to pass on to future generation?
"Well no, I haven't. But I think it would be, to be kind. I don't think I ever was mean to anyone. I hope I wasn't without knowing I was. And, to enjoy life. To live it - to enjoy it. And that's what I told the doctor's at the clinic - how I kept so healthy. Don't eat so much. Don't eat too much and keep active I told them. They laughed and said I guess that's right. But that's not really any advice to pass on to anybody. If you can be happy - have a good disposition."
Rest in peace, my dear grand aunt Ella. Thank you.

Relationship=2nd great-grandmother of Lane Robert ELLIS.
Elizabeth YUTZELER was born on August 4, 1844 at Boltigen, Bern, Switzerland. She was the daughter of David JUTZELER and Magdalena MUELLER. Elizabeth YUTZELER married Jacob BAUMANN, son of Hiltbrand BAUMANN and Anna MUELLER, in July, 1869 at Rome, Oneida County, New York, United States of America; According to ship passenger list entries probably for Jacob and Elizabeth Baumann, they were already married before emigrating from Switzerland. According to family bible Jacob and Elizabeth may have been married in July of 1869 in New York. According to the 1900 census entries for Jacob and Elizabeth, they arrived in America in 1868, had been in the country 32 years and married 31 years. This, along with the bible entry showing a probable marriage the year after arriving in America, leads to the possibility that either the Jacob and Elizabeth Baumann found emigrating together in 1868 are not the right people, or that if they are they were incorrectly recorded as married and her name listed as Baumann instead of Yutzeler. More research is needed. Elizabeth YUTZELER died on December 18, 1922 at Berne, Milton Township, Dodge County, Minnesota, United States of America, at age 78. She was buried on December 21, 1922 at Berne Cemetery, Milton Township, Dodge County, Minnesota, United States of America.
