Carol Joan King, 66, once of SV

Carol Joan King, 66, a longtime Spring Valley teacher, died Wednesday, March 10, 2004, at Seasons Hospice in Rochester after a long illness with cancer.

She was born Dec. 19, 1937, in Chatfield and grew up on the family farm, graduating from Stewartville High School in 1955. She earned an elementary education degree from Winona State College and taught in Albert Lea; Richfield, Minn; Honolulu; Pine Island; and for the past 20 years, Spring Valley. She retired from Kingsland Elementary School in May of last year.

She was an active member of the Stewartville Area Historical Society and the Kingsland Elementary, Minnesota, and National Education associations. She collected antiques and had a lifelong interest in historic preservation.

Survivors include two daughters, Sara Jo (Jeff) Wagner of Rochester and Jess Ann Speier of Minneapolis; a grandson, Joshua Wagner; two brothers, John H. (Virginia) King of rural Stewartville and Ross (Carol) King of Vermillion, S.D; and three sisters, Adean (Dale) Turner of Albert Lea, Mary Engel of Monroe, N.C., and Rose (Richard) Taliaferro of St. Petersburg, Fla. She was preceded in death by an infant brother.

The funeral was Saturday at Stewartville United Methodist Church with the Revs. Jef Olson and Mary Hurmence officiating. Burial in Woodlawn Cemetery in Stewartville.

Griffin-Ray Funeral Home in Stewartville was in charge of arrangements.

The family prefers memorials to the Stewartville Area Historical Society or the United Methodist Church.
