UNSTONE RESIDENT'S DEATH.
Late Mr. J.R. Johnson, J.P.
His many friends will regret to hear of the death of an old and esteemed Unstone resident in the person of Mr. J.R. Johnson, J.P., who passed away at his residence on Wednesday at the age of 75 years. The deceased had been in failing health for a considerable time, but the end came suddenly. Relatives and friends all believed that the improved weather would result in another rally, and hopes were entertained that he would again take part in his many public duties. For many years his whole time had been taken up with public work, and as a magistrate, local representative of the Chesterfield Board of Guardians and Rural District Council, on which he had sat for 20 years (succeeding Mr. E.T. Summerfield, the Unstone schoolmaster), as a member of the Derbyshire County Council, chairman of the Unstone Council School Managers, and as governor of the Dronfield and Chesterfield Grammar Schools he had many friends. His death is a serious loss to the village of Unstone, as he was regarded as the local authority on all questions affecting the parish. His experience had been gained by a whole life's work in connection with the administration of public affairs.
Mr. Johnson was born at Duckmanton, where his father had a large farm, but had lived at Unstone since he was two years of age. He was educated at the Chesterfield Grammar School under the Rev. F. Calder. In 1871 he was appointed clerk to the Unstone School Board, and held that office for 35 years. Since his health has been failing he had relinquished many of his public offices. Three years ago he retired from the County Council, and of late he had not been seen on the Bench. He was appointed a magistrate for the county in 1909.
The funeral will take place at Dronfield Cemetery on Monday next.

Members of the local Parish Council and Council School Managers, Messrs. G.M. Hawley, A. Swift, W. Redhead, A. Orton, H. Dawson, and J. Redhead, walked in the front. When passing the Unstone Council School the children were standing on each side of the road, the boys all at the salute. On arrival at the Cemetery there was a large number of public men from the whole district, including Dr. H. Peck (Medical Officer of Health), Mr. Harold Taylor (Sanitary Engineer), Mr. T.I. David (Assistant Clerk), the Rev. C.H. Molineux (Stavely), Messrs. J. Lee (Mosbro'), J. Parker (Calow), H. Phipps (Brimington), A.
