Warren E. Hess -- Stewartville

STEWARTVILLE -- The funeral for Warren E. Hess will be 1:30 p.m. Friday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Stewartville, with the Rev. Lyle Fritsch officiating. Burial will be in the Chatfield Cemetery.

Mr. Hess, 79, of Route 2, Stewartville, a longtime area farmer and retired Mayo Clinic custodian, died Tuesday (June 11, 2002) as the result of a farm accident at his home.

Born Aug. 10, 1922, in Spring Valley, he grew up on the family farm and graduated from Chatfield High School in 1940. On June 21, he married Jo Mae Engel in Chatfield. They farmed on his family's farm and in 1957 moved to their current farm, where they were certified organic farmers. In addition to farming, he was a custodian at the clinic for 22 years until retiring in 1989. He had been senior citizens programming director in Stewartville since 1986 and was a longtime member of St. John's Lutheran Church, where he served as usher and on several boards. He served on the Sumner Township Board for 39 years, was a member of the Fillmore County Farm Bureau and was an avid sports fan.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Kathryn (Wayne) Gillespie of Callahan, Colo., Shari (Rex) Edge of Dodge Center and Mary Hess of St. Paul; five grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and three sisters, Betty (Gerhardt) Schumann of Grand Meadow, Margery (Gustav) Henselin of Rochester and Janice (Harold) Kuhlman of Racine. He was preceded in death by a son, a daughter, a brother and a sister.

Friends may call from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. today and 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday at Griffin-Gray Funeral Home in Stewartville, and an hour before the service at the church. He married Jo Mae ENGEL, daughter of Walter G. ENGEL and Doris Emily LILLIE, on June 21, 1952.
