Gordon E. Gill, 87, of Spring Valley, died Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2004, at the Spring Valley Care Center.

He was born Nov. 29, 1916, to William and Lois (Rathbun) Gill on the family farm south of Spring Valley.

He attended rural school and Spring Valley High School. He worked on area farms until marrying Elsie Hafner March 11, 1939, in Spring Valley. The couple made their home on a family farm southeast of Spring Valley. She died June 16, 1971.

He married Dolores Brandt Hyland March 3, 1973 in Spring Valley. The couple made their home on his farm until moving into Spring Valley in 1978. He became a resident of the Care Center in August 2002.

He was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Spring Valley, serving on the church council and church cemetery board. He was also a member of the Spring Valley Historical Society, Fillmore County Historical Society and Friends of Forestville. He served on rural school boards and was active in the Farm Bureau.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Leslie (Deanne) of Rochester and Michael (Annette) of LaCrosse; two daughters, Sharon (Richard) Jahn of Spring Valley and Kathleen (Dwayne) Buchholz of Brooklyn Park, Minn; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two stepsons, Arnold Hyland of Redding, Calif., and Duane (Annette) Hyland of Spring Valley; three stepgrandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; and one brother, Donald Gill of Pine Island, Minn.

Besides his first wife, he was preceded in death by one brother, Erwin Gill and one stepgranddaughter, Stephanie Hyland.

The funeral was Sunday at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Spring Valley with the Rev. Dennis Timmerman and Laura Fladten co-officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

The family suggests memorials to Our Savior’s Lutheran Church or Friends of Forestville.
